Emergency-like conditions prevail in India
By Abdus Sattar Ghazali: Former Indian Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha Wednesday alleged “emergency-line” conditions are prevailing in the country under the present regime and the arrest of five activists on suspicion of Maoist links shows that any voice of dissent is not safe. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Wednesday issued notice to the Maharashtra chief secretary and director general of police on the arrests of five human rights activists – Sudha Bharadwaj, Vernon Gonsalves, Varavara Rao, Gautam Navlakha and Arun Ferreira – from different cities on Tuesday (August 28). The nationwide crackdown on activists, advocates and human rights defenders is disturbing and threatens core human-rights values, Amnesty International India and Oxfam India said in a joint statement on Tuesday. Maldives snubs India: Withdraw your military choppers and personnel
By Abdus Sattar Ghazali: The Maldives has asked India to withdraw its military choppers and personnel posted in the island as the Indo-Maldives agreement has expired in June 2018. The Maldives’ ambassador in India, Ahmed Mohamed, told Reuters that two military helicopters provided by India were mainly used for medical evacuations but were no longer required as the islands had built up enough resources of its own. “They were very useful in the past but with the development of adequate infrastructure, facilities and resources we are now in a position to handle medical evacuations on our own,” he said. The Maldives, 400 km (250 miles) to the southwest of India, is close to the world’s busiest shipping lanes, between China and the Middle East. Read More

The U.N. should not remain passive in the face of human wrongs in Kashmir
Dr. Ghulam Nabi Fai
:
We feel confident that the Secretary General of the United Nations will not encourage any party to an international dispute
(Kashmir) which has been taken cognizance of by the United Nations to circumvent and rebuff the world organization. It should be one thing for the United Nations to remain inactive if an alternative and credible peace process were in motion. It is another when not even the beginning of an effort towards arriving at a settlement bilaterally between the parties or through mediation by friendly governments is visible. To put it plainly, the present situation is that the United Nations is allowing its resolutions to be dishonored and the people of Kashmir to be condemned to systematic destruction. The people of Kashmir deserve better. Read More

By Arthur Kane Scott
:
Trump’s incompetence is mobilizing the rest of us, especially women, Millennials/Plurals, Latinos/Blacks, and suburban middle-class whites
into a significant “Blue Wave” pointing to a Democratic recovery of the House. By taking back the House, the “Trumpian” authoritarian threat to American democracy will be checked through a reinvigorated Democratic party that honors the constitution, respects the rule of law, and holds all its elected officials, most of all, the president, accountable to a higher standard of behavior embody by the likes of Washington, Lincoln and FDR. Burhanuddin Qasmi: 40 lakh names struck off from Assam NRC: Parteek Hajela’s team made an unpleasant joke with peasantry of Assam and a gigantic mockery of public resources. Assamese people want NRC update work be done properly and professionally. The Aaland Islands Model and Kashmir
Dr. Ghulam Nabi Fai: There are some disputes in modern history that one might take lessons from in understanding the wisest course to take in resolving the Kashmiri dispute.
The Aaland Islands is a case in point, as are South Tyrol, Trieste, Andorra, and Northern Ireland, each of which was contested by neighboring countries.  Finland and Sweden both coveted The Aaland Islands; South Tyrol was in dispute between Austria and Italy; Trieste was divided between Italy and Yugoslavia; Andorra is a small principality. Virtually all of these cases, the country in question was seized or split in two in the course of war between neighboring countries. Understanding the Aaland Islands means seeing its problems in the larger context of Finland, Sweden and their political and social milieu.
